Brush and undergrowth ground into mulch on site

Cornerstone Excavation Group does forestry mulching in Indian Trail and across the Charlotte metro. A mulching head on a compact track loader grinds brush, undergrowth and small trees where they stand. The chips drop and stay on the ground as cover. It opens a lot up fast, and it is not the same as full land clearing.

Cornerstone is an excavation contractor based out of Indian Trail, 5.0-rated on Google. Mulching fits overgrown lots, fence lines, trails and property lines. Stumps and roots stay in the ground, so the soil holds together. Call (980) 315-5707 for a free estimate and an on-site look first.

What forestry mulching leaves behind on the ground

Mulching grinds standing brush and small trees into chips. The chips fall where the machine works and spread out as a layer of cover. That layer sits on the soil and slows runoff on open ground. Roots and stumps stay in place underneath it.

Ground that keeps its roots and cover usually moves less than ground that gets grubbed. That is the main reason to mulch instead of clear. It also means the lot is not build ready. A house pad or a footing needs the stumps and roots out, which is clearing and grubbing.

The goal for the lot decides the method. Opening up woods, thinning growth or reaching a back corner points to mulching. A slab, a garage or a new house points to full clearing and site prep for a house pad. Tell us what goes on the ground and we will say which one fits.

Which jobs is forestry mulching the right tool for?

Overgrown lots are the common one. Years of brush, vines and saplings fill in, and the lot stops being usable. A mulcher cuts through that growth and leaves the standing trees you want. You get the lot back without a dig.

Fence lines, property lines and trails are the other steady work. So is thinning a wooded tract or a piece of hunting land. Right of way brush along commercial frontage and access roads fits here too. Heavier jobs that pull stumps and load out material run as clearing, with the debris hauled off site.

Access matters more than acreage on most of these jobs. The machine needs a way in and room to turn. Thick vine mats, wet ground and tight lot lines all slow the pace. We look at that on site before we price anything.

Mulching rules and ground conditions in Union County

Most of our mulching sits on Piedmont red clay in Union County and Mecklenburg County. Clay turns slick and soft after rain, so timing matters on a wooded tract. East of Charlotte the Carolina Slate Belt brings rock close to the surface in spots. Rock and steep slopes both change how the machine works.

North Carolina's Sedimentation Pollution Control Act sets the state rule for land disturbance. NC DEQ says a plan is required on sites disturbing over one acre. It goes in at least 30 days ahead and has to be approved before work starts. Mulching leaves roots and cover in place, so it usually disturbs far less ground than grubbing.

Local programs can be stricter than the state. Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte and the City of Monroe run their own erosion programs. Charlotte's tree ordinance also covers development sites inside the city. Check the county or town over your lot, because that rule is the one that counts.

How We Work

How a Job With Cornerstone Excavation Group Runs

From the first call to the last load hauled off, here is how it goes.

1

Call us

Call or text (980) 315-5707 and tell us what the job is. We ask what the access looks like and when you need it done.

2

We look at the site

We come out to see the ground, the access and where the water goes. The visit and the estimate are free.

3

The plan

We set how the equipment gets in, where the material goes and what order the work runs in. Utility locates go in through NC811 before we dig, and any permit stays in the owner or builder's name.

4

We do the work

The machines come in and the job gets done in the order we planned. Weather moves earthwork, so we tell you when the schedule shifts.

5

Cleanup and haul-off

Spoils, brush and demolition material leave on our dump trucks. We grade the ground back before the equipment comes off the site.

FAQ

Forestry Mulching Questions, Answered

Common questions about forestry mulching across the Charlotte metro, Union County and the York County side of South Carolina. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (980) 315-5707

What are the downsides of forestry mulching?
Stumps and roots stay in the ground, so the lot is not build ready. Big trees are past what a mulching head can take. The chips sit on the surface for a while before they break down. On thick, heavy growth a mulcher can also be slower than clearing the lot outright.
How many acres can a forestry mulcher clear in a day?
The growth matters more than the acres. Light brush and saplings move fast. Dense stems, bigger trunks, steep ground and rock all slow it down. We give you a real timeline after we see the tract, so call (980) 315-5707.
Do you need a permit for forestry mulching?
It depends on how much ground gets disturbed and which office covers your lot. NC DEQ requires an approved plan on sites disturbing over one acre. Mecklenburg County, Charlotte and Monroe run their own erosion programs, so check the one over your lot. The owner or the general contractor holds that approval, and we work to it.
How big of a tree can a forestry mulcher handle?
Small trees, saplings and brush are what a mulching head is built for. Bigger trunks are past it, and pushing them through is hard on the machine. Those come down with an excavator instead, and that work runs as land clearing. We can do both on one property, so tell us what is standing out there.
Does the mulch get hauled away?
The chips stay on the ground. They spread out over the worked area and sit there as cover. That cover holds soil on open ground and breaks down over time. If you want the material gone, that runs as a clearing job with trucks, and we price it that way.
How much does forestry mulching cost?
Price comes down to the tract. Acres, how thick the growth is, stem size, slope, rock and access all move it. How clean you want the finish moves it too. We look at the site first and the estimate is free, so call (980) 315-5707.
