Trenches dug for whoever sets the line

Cornerstone Excavation Group does trenching in Indian Trail and across the Charlotte metro. We dig the trench for whoever sets the line, like an electrician running conduit to a detached garage. The trade, the plan or the utility sets the depth and route, and we dig to it. The trench stays open for the inspection, and then we backfill it and put the yard back.

Cornerstone is 5.0-rated on Google and based in Indian Trail, on the east side of Charlotte. We work the Charlotte metro, Union County and the York County side of South Carolina. A full water, sewer or storm system built to a plan is utility installation work. Call (980) 315-5707 for a free estimate after an on-site look.

A trenching contractor for electricians, plumbers and builders

Running power underground to a shop, pool equipment, a standby generator or an EV charger starts with a trench. Most electricians do not dig those trenches themselves. They hire out the trenching, then set the conduit and pull the wire. We dig the run on the route the electrician marks.

Plumbers and the gas company need trenches too, for a water service, a sewer lateral or a gas line. We dig to their route and depth and hold the trench open until they finish.

For builders and general contractors, we dig footing trenches and utility trenches on new lots. On commercial sites we trench for fiber and telecom conduit and for drain lines. A French drain system is yard drainage work. Digging a full house foundation falls under foundation excavation.

How does a trenching job run, from locates to backfill?

Every job starts with the locates. North Carolina law calls for notice to NC811 at least three full working days before digging starts. On the York County side, the request goes to South Carolina 811. Then the utilities mark their public lines.

The dig follows the route and depth the trade gives us. In a finished yard we work with a mini excavator. The trench stays open while the trade sets the line and the inspection gets done.

After the inspection we backfill and compact the trench, then grade the top back. Extra dirt leaves on our dump trucks, so hauling the spoils is part of the job. If you want the fill, the spoils can stay on site instead.

Trench digging in red clay and Union County rock

Most ground around Charlotte and Union County is Piedmont red clay. Dry clay holds a trench wall well. After a hard rain it turns soft, and the walls can slump. A wet week can push a start date back.

Federal trench-safety rules call for cave-in protection once a trench in soil reaches 5 feet deep. A shallower trench needs it too if the ground shows signs of caving. That protection can be a trench box or walls cut back at a slope. On one of our utility jobs, a steel trench box went in around a new hydrant assembly.

Rock changes a trench too. The Carolina Slate Belt, a band of volcanic rock, runs through Union County. When the machine finds rock partway down a run, the pace changes and sometimes the route does. We tell you what we hit as soon as we hit it.

How We Work

How a Job With Cornerstone Excavation Group Runs

From the first call to the last load hauled off, here is how it goes.

1

Call us

Call or text (980) 315-5707 and tell us what the job is. We ask what the access looks like and when you need it done.

2

We look at the site

We come out to see the ground, the access and where the water goes. The visit and the estimate are free.

3

The plan

We set how the equipment gets in, where the material goes and what order the work runs in. Utility locates go in through NC811 before we dig, and any permit stays in the owner or builder's name.

4

We do the work

The machines come in and the job gets done in the order we planned. Weather moves earthwork, so we tell you when the schedule shifts.

5

Cleanup and haul-off

Spoils, brush and demolition material leave on our dump trucks. We grade the ground back before the equipment comes off the site.

FAQ

Trenching Questions, Answered

Common questions about trenching across the Charlotte metro, Union County and the York County side of South Carolina. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (980) 315-5707

Do you pull the wire or hook up the line?
Each trade makes its own connections. The electrician pulls the wire, and the gas company or the plumber sets the gas pipe. Our part is the trench, dug to their depth and backfilled after the inspection.
How deep will you dig the trench?
The depth comes from whoever sets the line: the electrician, the plumber, the gas company, the utility or the plan. Give us that depth and the route, and we dig to it. A deeper trench can need a trench box, which changes the setup.
Will 811 mark every line in my yard?
In North Carolina, 811 locators do not mark private lines. Lines from the meter or the right of way to the house are private. So are secondary water, sewer, gas and electric lines. A paid private line locator can mark those, so tell us about any line you know of.
How long does a trenching job take?
The length of the run, the depth, rock and access set the pace. Wet clay can push the start back. The trench also stays open until the line is set and inspected, so the trade's schedule matters. We give you a timeline with the estimate.
Do you dig trenches for homeowners?
Yes. We dig for homeowners, electricians, plumbers, builders, general contractors and commercial property owners. A homeowner can book the trench with us and have the electrician or the plumber set the line.
How much does trenching cost?
The big drivers are how long the trench runs and how deep it goes. Hard clay and rock cost more to dig than soft, loose soil. Access, a trench box on deeper cuts, hauling the spoils and putting the yard back move it too. We look at the job first and the estimate is free, so call (980) 315-5707.

Cornerstone Excavation Group did an outstanding job on my property. They handled tree removal, land clearing, and grading, and the entire process was smooth from start to finish. Communication was clear and consistent, and they showed up when they said they would, which I really appreciated. The crew was professional, respectful, and clearly knew what they were doing. They removed multiple trees, cleared the land efficiently, and graded everything perfectly in preparation for the next phase. The property looked completely transformed when they were finished, and the site was left clean and well organized. It’s easy to tell they take pride in their work.
