Erosion Control in Indian Trail, NC

Erosion Control · Indian Trail, NC

Keeping red clay on the lot and off the street

Cornerstone Excavation Group installs erosion control on building sites in Indian Trail and across the Charlotte metro. That can mean silt fence, a stone construction entrance, protection around storm inlets, and seed and mulch on bare ground. The measures go in before the grading starts and stay up until the ground holds. Builders, developers and owners can book it with the site prep and building pads.

Homeowners call us too, when a yard or a bank keeps washing out. The fix depends on where the water runs: regrading, drainage, a wall or new ground cover. Cornerstone is 5.0-rated on Google and based in Indian Trail, on the east side of Charlotte. Call (980) 315-5707 for an on-site look and a free estimate.

What We Handle

  • Silt fence trenched in, backfilled and kept up along the low side of the site
  • Stone construction entrances that keep trucks from tracking clay onto the street
  • Protection around storm inlets so sediment stays out of the pipes
  • Seed and mulch on bare ground until the grass takes hold
  • Rock where water leaves a pipe, so the outlet holds
  • Silt fence repaired and reset after storms
  • Orange safety fence along the tree line where the plan calls for it
  • Yard and bank erosion fixed with regrading, drainage or a wall

Silt fence installation and erosion control on building sites

On a permitted site, the erosion control plan sets what goes in and where. Silt fence runs along the low side of the disturbed area. We trench its bottom edge in and backfill it, so water does not run under the fabric. On one red clay pad we cut and graded, silt fence and orange safety fence ran along the tree line.

A stone construction entrance at the road keeps trucks from tracking red clay onto the street. Storm inlets on and near the site get protection, so sediment stays out of the pipes. Where water leaves a pipe, we set rock so the outlet does not wash out.

Bare ground gets seed and mulch as each area is finished. We can hydroseed the graded ground so it holds. At one commercial site, we seeded the strip inside a new curb.

When does a site around Charlotte need an erosion control plan?

North Carolina requires an erosion control plan for a site that disturbs more than one acre. The plan has to be filed 30 or more days ahead and approved before the work starts. On those sites, the erosion control devices have to keep the sediment inside the tract.

Local erosion control programs need the state's approval, and they can set stricter rules. Around here, Mecklenburg County, Gaston County, the City of Charlotte and the Town of Huntersville run their own. In Union County, the City of Monroe and the towns of Waxhaw and Weddington do too. Union County itself has no local program on the state's list, so unincorporated Union County goes through NC DEQ.

State law gives graded slopes left bare 21 calendar days after a phase of grading to get cover. Permanent ground cover is due within 90 calendar days after construction ends, unless the rules say otherwise. A site of one acre or more with an approved plan needs coverage under NC DEQ's construction general permit, NCG01. Its ground cover deadlines can differ, so the plan and the permit set the clock.

Fixing yard erosion and a bank that keeps washing out

A yard washes out when water runs fast across bare ground. Runoff cuts ruts across the clay, and a steep bank can lose more soil with every storm. We look at where the water comes from and where it needs to go before we pick the fix.

Many fixes start with regrading the yard so water runs away from the house and off the slope. Water that needs a path gets drainage work, like a swale or a buried drain line. A bank too steep to hold its soil may need a retaining wall.

Bare ground then gets seed and mulch so it holds while the grass grows in. We finished one backyard regrade that way, with seed and mulch over the new grade.

How We Work

How a Job With Cornerstone Excavation Group Runs

From the first call to the last load hauled off, here is how it goes.

1

Call us

Call or text (980) 315-5707 and tell us what the job is. We ask what the access looks like and when you need it done.

2

We look at the site

We come out to see the ground, the access and where the water goes. The visit and the estimate are free.

3

The plan

We set how the equipment gets in, where the material goes and what order the work runs in. Utility locates go in through NC811 before we dig, and any permit stays in the owner or builder's name.

4

We do the work

The machines come in and the job gets done in the order we planned. Weather moves earthwork, so we tell you when the schedule shifts.

5

Cleanup and haul-off

Spoils, brush and demolition material leave on our dump trucks. We grade the ground back before the equipment comes off the site.

FAQ

Erosion Control Questions, Answered

Common questions about erosion control across the Charlotte metro, Union County and the York County side of South Carolina. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (980) 315-5707

Do I need silt fence on my lot?
If the site disturbs more than one acre, the approved plan shows whether silt fence goes in, and where. On a smaller lot, local rules can still require erosion control, so check with the town or county first. In Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, a subdivision counts as one tract, so its lots can need a plan. On the South Carolina side, around Fort Mill and Rock Hill, check with York County.
Who is responsible for erosion control on a site?
The owner, developer or builder holds the permit. On sites over an acre, state law puts the duty to install the devices on the person conducting the work. In Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, controlling the sediment is the job of the owner or the financially responsible party. Our part is the install and the upkeep.
Do you write erosion control plans?
No. An engineer or designer prepares the plan, and the owner or developer files it for approval. We install to the approved plan. Bring it to the on-site look, and we price the work from it.
Does silt fence need upkeep after storms?
Yes. A hard rain can bury the fence in sediment or wash out under it. We repair and reset the fence after storms until the ground holds. In Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, the measures stay until the grass is up an inch and ruts are reseeded.
Can you fix a yard or bank that keeps washing out?
Yes. A washout is a water problem, so the fix starts with where the water runs. That can mean a regrade, a swale, a buried drain line or a wall, then seed and mulch. We look at it on site first, and the estimate is free.
How much does erosion control cost?
Price follows the site: how much fence the low side needs, the slope and the access. The plan's other measures and how long the ground stays open move it too, since storms mean repairs. We price it after an on-site look, and the estimate is free, so call (980) 315-5707. For market figures, see our guide to what silt fence installation costs in North Carolina.
