Concrete removal is excavation work, and Cornerstone Excavation Group handles it in Indian Trail and around the Charlotte metro. We break up and dig out old driveways, patios, walkways, sidewalks, shed and garage slabs, steps and footings. The broken concrete is loaded and hauled off on our dump trucks. Then we backfill and grade the ground so a new slab can go in or the yard can go back.
This work covers concrete with no building on it, plus the slabs and footings a teardown leaves behind. When a whole house, garage or shed has to come down, that is demolition work. We are based in Indian Trail, on the east side of Charlotte, and 5.0-rated on Google. Call (980) 315-5707 to set up an on-site look and a free estimate.

A cracked, sinking driveway has to come out before a new one can go in. An old patio may be in the way of a bigger yard, and a shed slab outlasts the shed. We break the concrete up, load it and haul it off, along with walkways, sidewalks and steps. In a tight backyard, we use a mini excavator and a skid steer.
Old foundations and footings sit deeper and take more digging. On a lot headed for new construction, they come out before the site prep and pad work starts. On our project in Clover, South Carolina, a fire-damaged, abandoned structure came down first. Then we dug out what was left of its concrete foundation and hauled all of it off.
Concrete can also hide under dirt, brush or old debris. We dig those pieces up and load them out like any other slab. On one cleanup, a slab turned up under a pile of rubble once the pile was cleared.
Sometimes, within tight limits. NC DEQ lists unpainted concrete as inert debris, along with brick, concrete block, clean soil, rock and gravel. State rules let inert debris be used as beneficial fill, to level an area or bring it to grade.
DEQ adds a catch: that only holds so long as no excavation occurs. By that rule, a hole dug just to bury slab pieces does not qualify. The fill also needs at least one foot of compacted soil on top. It has to stay out of waters of the state and above the seasonal high groundwater table.
Whether a load qualifies is for the owner and NC DEQ to confirm, and local rules can apply too. On most jobs, we haul the broken concrete off the property.
It depends on where the concrete sits. The end of a driveway and the sidewalk can lie in the public right-of-way. The city, the town or NCDOT controls that strip, depending on who maintains the road. The owner or the builder holds any permit, so check with that office first.
In Charlotte, work that takes up a sidewalk, planting strip or traffic lane needs a Right-of-Way Use Permit from CDOT. Taking out pavement or sidewalk there can also call for a Street Cut Permit from the city's Street Maintenance Division.
On a state road, the local NCDOT District Engineer takes driveway permit applications. Concrete that sits wholly on your own lot is a question for your town or county, so ask there too.
