Your pool builder hands us a plan and a layout for the yard. That plan sets the footprint, the depth at both ends, and how far past the wall line we dig. The extra width gives the pool crew room to work around the shell. We mark the outline on the ground before a machine moves.
We file a utility locate request with NC811 before the first bucket. NC811 asks for three working days of notice before you dig, and the utilities come mark their lines. Private lines are different: an irrigation loop or a gas line to a grill belongs to the homeowner. Point those out to us.
Most backyard pool digs run a day or two on site. Rock, rain and a narrow access route stretch that out. Those are typical windows rather than promises, and weather moves them. We give you a real timeline once we have seen the yard.
Most pools sit behind the house, so the route in matters as much as the hole. We measure the gate opening, the side yard and the turns before we quote the job. A mini excavator fits through openings that stop a full size machine. When nothing fits, we talk through the access plan with you before the job starts.
We plan one travel lane in and out and keep the machines on it. The driveway gets protection where tracks cross it, and the rest of the lawn stays outside the work. That keeps the torn up ground to one lane instead of the whole backyard.
A pool dig makes a real pile of dirt, and it has to go somewhere. Some of it can stay to fill low spots or raise the grade near the pool. The rest is loaded into dump trucks, see dirt and debris hauling. We settle that with you and the builder before the dig starts.
The ground east of Charlotte sits on the Carolina Slate Belt, and red Piedmont clay covers most of it. Rock turns up in some Union County digs, and rock changes the dig. We tell you what we are into as soon as we find it, and what it does to the plan.
Clay holds water instead of draining it. A hole can take on rain and sit wet for a day. We shape the sides to hold while the pool builder works. If the yard falls hard toward the pool, a block retaining wall is often the answer for the slope.
Once the shell is set, we come back to backfill around it and bring the yard back to grade. That work includes the pad for the deck area and the rough and final grading around the pool. The finished grade moves water away from the house and the pool.
