A backyard pool in Waxhaw starts with a hole, and the hole is the hard part. Lots here run from four tenths of an acre up past a full acre, over red Piedmont clay. Getting a machine past the house and through a fence line takes planning. Then the spoil pile has to leave, and the yard has to drain right afterward.

Waxhaw sits on Piedmont red clay. Clay holds water at the surface and sheds the rest downhill. A low spot in a yard can stay soft for days after a storm. Reshaping the surface usually moves more water than pipe does.
Rock is the other variable. The Carolina Slate Belt runs through Union County, and the state geological survey mapped it here decades ago. How shallow that rock sits changes from lot to lot. Rock changes the dig, which is why we look at the site before we quote it.
Most yard water problems here start with grade. We cut swales, reset the fall away from the house and rebuild the low spots. Where grade alone will not move the water, buried pipe and a French drain carry it out. That is the yard drainage side of the work.
About 20,500 people lived inside the town limits at the 2020 census, and Waxhaw keeps building. A new house needs a pad, cut and fill, and the first grade that sets drainage. Builders and general contractors call us for that, plus access for the trades and silt fence. That is the site prep and building pads end of the job.
Wooded and pasture tracts still come up around Twelve Mile Creek Road and the county roads outside town. Clearing one means trees, brush, stumps and roots out, with the debris hauled off. We grade the ground after when the job calls for it. Forestry mulching is one method we use on lighter growth.
Older structures come down too. Sheds, garages, barns, houses and light commercial buildings, plus concrete slabs, driveways and old foundations. We clear the site and haul the material away. Sloped lots often want a block retaining wall afterward, with the base compacted and drainage set behind the wall.
Waxhaw runs its own building department. Union County Building Code Enforcement issues building permits across the county, except inside Monroe and Waxhaw town limits. Inside Waxhaw, the town's Building Inspections and Permitting division handles them. The county says the same about pool inspections.
A 28173 address is not always inside those town limits. The same ZIP reaches Marvin, part of Weddington and unincorporated Union County. That changes which office the paperwork goes to, so check the address early. Permits are usually pulled by the property owner or the general contractor.
The town is also delegated by the North Carolina Sedimentation Control Commission to regulate land-disturbing work. Its NC DEQ fee schedule ties that permit to commercial disturbance over 12,000 square feet, or an acre disturbed. Smaller single-family lots sign an erosion and sediment control installation and maintenance agreement instead. Rules change, so confirm the current ones with the town.
Waxhaw grew out from a small downtown on Main Street into neighborhoods with real yard space. Hunter Oaks sits on about half-acre lots. The Club at Longview and Marvin Creek run from roughly four tenths of an acre up to a full acre. Millbridge, Lawson, Cureton, Hollister and Skyecroft add hundreds more homes around them.
A pool dig needs a path in. We look at gates, fence lines, slope, trees and where the utilities run before anything moves. Locates go in through NC811 first. The dig follows the pool builder's plan for shape, depth and over-dig.
Spoil from an inground pool fills a lot of truck beds. We haul it off, or keep some on site for grade work when the plan calls for it. After the shell is set we backfill and bring the ground around the deck to grade. Most digs run a day or two, and weather moves that.
