Most Weddington jobs start on a big lot with a lot of yard to cross. A pool dig on an acre means getting a machine past the house without tearing up the drive. The soil here is Cecil red clay, and the state geologic map shows hard rock under much of the town. Both change how a dig goes.

The soil survey maps most of Weddington as Cecil, a red clay soil. Lloyd clay loam shows up toward the southwest side of town. Both shed water on a slope and hold it in a low spot. That is why a flat backyard here can stay soft for days after a storm.
Water is the other half of the job. Six Mile Creek and the West Fork of Twelve Mile Creek run through town. The low ground near them stays wet longer than the rest of the lot. Most yard problems out here are grade problems first, so we reshape the grade before anyone talks about pipe.
Where grade alone cannot fix it, we add yard drainage work to carry water past the house. Rock is the other variable. The state geologic map shows metavolcanic rock under the middle of Weddington. Granite sits to the northeast and gabbro to the southwest, and the depth changes lot to lot.
Weddington grows in small subdivisions, not big tracts. The town's own project list runs to conventional and conservation subdivisions of five to about 46 lots. They sit on roads like Hemby Road, Forest Lawn Drive and Twelve Mile Creek Road. Most of those lots start as woods or old pasture.
Clearing comes first, then the pad. We take out the trees, brush and stumps, haul the debris off, and set a level pad for the builder. Compaction gets done to what the builder or the engineer calls for. The first grade decides where water goes, and that is site prep on a wooded acre.
Weddington also protects tree canopy. The ordinance asks a development site to keep part of the buildable area as a contiguous tree save. The canopy math gets approved by the Union County Urban Forester. Check the tree rules with the town before the saw starts.
Weddington does not issue building permits. The town issues the zoning permit, and you need that first. Union County Building Code Enforcement issues the building permit from its office in Monroe. The owner or the builder holds the permits, and we work to the approved plan.
Erosion control runs through the town itself. Weddington takes a compliance form on sites that disturb less than an acre. At one acre or more it takes a financial responsibility form and a full erosion control plan. The ordinance does not require plan approval below an acre, and land under one plan of development counts together.
New homes carry one more step. The town asks every new home applicant to file an electronic notice of intent under the state NCG01 permit. Sites in the Six Mile Creek watershed face tighter state rules tied to an endangered mussel. The town says to verify those with the state.
Weddington zones most of its land for big lots. The town ordinance sets a 40,000 square foot minimum lot size in the R-40 district. Its larger districts go to 60,000 and 80,000 square feet. That usually leaves room for a pool, a deck and a real backyard.
Room is not the same as access. We look at the gate line, the septic field, the trees and the slope before a machine rolls. The dig follows the pool builder's plan for shape and depth, plus the over-dig the shell needs. Spoils get hauled off on our trucks when the lot has nowhere to put them.
Weddington also sets the pool back from the property line. The ordinance puts swimming pools at least 15 feet off any side or rear lot line. Pool decks and other at grade work can sit closer, at five feet. Confirm your setbacks with the town before the layout gets staked.
